Business Mastery for Massage Therapists
Business Mastery: A Guide for Creating a Fulfilling, Thriving Business and Keeping it Successful
is one of the first business and marketing books for massage therapists. It is written by Cherie Sohnen-Moe who was a massage therapist at one time but turned her talents for marketing into helping massage therapists in business and marketing. These topics are not covered well in massage school. One could really have a degree in business and marketing first before coming into the massage profession! Cherie is one of the most active participants in the massage profession serving on many massage school boards and professional associations. She is also the author of a book called The Ethics of Touch: The Hands-on Practitioner’s Guide to Creating a Professional, Safe and Enduring Practice
which is also a great resource for massage therapists.
No matter where you are in your career, this book can help you and inspire you to achieving your goals and dreams as a massage therapist. She recommends creating a business journal to keep track of your progress and keep you motivated. I have an online massage business journal and am looking for stories from massage therapists on how they did build their business step by step. Tracking your progress will help you to see patterns in what you do and help you to become more conscious of the things you do to keep you from having success. It also comes with an online workbook that you can download. (The address is in the book)
The first part of the book focuses on Creating a Strong Foundation for your business. In doing so you set up the business in a way that you can grow into and that will allow you to create a business that will sustain you for many years to come. A strong foundation will support you through the many challenges that will show up in your career. Taking a look at your values, career focus, setting your purpose and clarifying your life vision are a part of building that foundation. Your barriers to success will show up in the way of old beliefs, attitudes and perceptions that you carry with you. (We all have them!) Becoming aware of the inner critic – that little voice that tells you that you are not good enough- is often so unconscious meaning that you just aren’t aware of it is part of the process of building any business. Cherie provides tools for actualizing your vision and breaking old habits that keep you stuck. Building a conscious practice requires studying the foundations of therapeutic communications and learning to actively listen to clients.
There is a section on how to find and get the perfect massage job including great tips for interviewing and resume writing.
She explains things like the independent contractor issues which are really confusing as well as figuring out your business status and some of the legal aspects of setting up a massage business. A chapter on business operations offers information on using technology to support your business and learning about things like HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
The Section on Marketing covers everything from basic marketing principles to how to apply them to a massage business. Client retention is given a whole chapter and is one of the key factors in creating a successful massage business.
