On Becoming a Massage Therapist
On Becoming a Massage Therapist is the most appropriate way I could think of to start this site out! It is a play on the words used by Carl Rogers who wrote a book called “On Becoming a Person”.
The path to becoming a massage therapist can also be a path of awakening to your own true self while engaging in the process of witnessing the healing of others. It is a path of becoming more authentic and arising to the challenges – big and small- along the way.
Massage Therapy is a combination of science and art. It is a process of learning about the science of the body, learning hands on skills and learning to combine what you know into a greater knowledge. It is about taking your roles of who you think you are, who others think you are and who you really are and trying to keep those perspectives close enough together to provide service to those in your massage practice.
Being of service is quite different from helping. Many massage therapists come to the profession ‘to help’ or to find a career that is more caring. It is these same things – helping and caring- that can bring a career to a screeching halt. Burn out is the result of caring too much and not taking care of your self first. Caring for yourself is much more than just the physical aspect of this career which so many massage schools focus on. You need to be able to take care of yourself financially as well as physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
The old claim that ‘it isn’t about the money’ doesn’t cut it anymore. It only shows you what your beliefs about money are. Money is usually attached with so many deep unconscious beliefs about self worth and thinking that it is wrong to make any money while being a massage therapist is a thing of the past.
The truth is that you can make the money that you need while being of service to others. You can be successful in all aspects of your massage career.
What it takes is having the confidence in yourself, the commitment to make it happen and learn what it is about to be a professional all while holding on to your true self.
