The 'healing martyr' belief afflicts many therapists, it seems that many see making money as sullying the 'pure nature' of their work. If you follow that sentiment to its logical conclusion, don't charge a dime for your work. See how long you can go before you burn out. Secondly, you'll find that people will tend to value your service less as you don't value it yourself.
It's true that money is no longer back by the Gold Standard, it is so called fiat money. It only has value in the eyes of the parties using it. Money should be considered a tool to facilitate your goals in life. Nothing more.
